Our Heritage

The origins of our club go back over 120 years! The Rotary Club of Manila Expats is proud to stand on the shoulders of over a century of leadership and service.

1905: The Beginning of Rotary

Rotary was founded in Chicago, USA by attorney Paul Harris, who brought together three friends on February 23, 1905, with the simple idea that professionals could exchange ideas, form friendships, and give back to their community. What began as a small circle soon grew into Rotary International, today one of the world’s largest and most respected service organizations.

1919: Rotary Arrives in Asia

Just fourteen years later, Rotary made history with the founding of the Rotary Club of Manila — the first Rotary club in Asia, chartered on June 1, 1919. Its distinguished membership quickly included many of the Philippines’ most influential business and civic leaders. For over a century, the Rotary Club of Manila has been a hub of leadership, philanthropy, and nation-building.

2024: A New Chapter with Manila Expats

One hundred & five years after Rotary’s arrival in Asia, a new chapter was written with the founding of the Rotary Club of Manila Expats in Manila, Philippines. Created to serve the unique needs of the city’s international community, the club brings together expatriate leaders, global entrepreneurs, and senior executives who are passionate about service and deeply committed to the country they now call home.

Our club represents the continuity of Rotary’s legacy in the Philippines: rooted in tradition, yet refreshed with international perspectives, modern leadership, and innovative approaches to service.
